This is a stone version of a Motte and Bailey castle although traditionally they would be made out of wood. The stone ones were no good because the Motte which is the manmade hill it sits on would collapse. The wood ones had their own problems too.
This is a stone keep castle which was the replacement structure for a Motte and Bailey castle. These had less problems and were permanent instead of the temporary ones.
